Creating games for all ages

Grind to Find fun

Happy Monday! As I sit here working on my newest game for an 18 card contest. I must point out how important it is to just keep going. I tend to have lots of ideas for mechanics and then try to build around them, but get to a point where I question is this fun? That is one of the biggest road blocks for myself. Where is the fun for the players? I have doubts that what I am building will resonate with the others or if I am on the right track.

I feel as a creator I always look at my games with a critical eye, but that critical eye can be a problem. What I’ve learned is to share it with others and get some outside feedback. Even if that feedback is from friends and family their encouragement can help move you forward.

I am a grinder by nature, but that is much easier when you know you are doing it right. As an athlete you know there is a right way or wrong way, and as I’ve always said “practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.” With game design there is no right way to make a game. There is your way and your ideas and the right isn’t known until the public gets a look.

Even this blog is just about creating a habit. I want to create a journal of my progress and you have to start somewhere. I’ve already missed out on the progress on my game Corners which has been entered into an abstract game contest and once the results are posted I plan on pitching it. Then there was a roll and write called Crazy Contractors, Next to Rule, and Galactic City. Which brings me to other message, but that will be for next time.
